The Mosquito Problem

Mosquitoes are considered the deadliest “animals” in the world. The Anopheles mosquito, in particular, is dangerous because it transmits malaria, which kills more than one million people every year, primarily in Africa.

The good news is you don’t have to get malaria.
Here’s what you need to know.

How Do Mosquitoes Work?

Female mosquitoes start biting at dusk and continue a few hours into the dark.

Malaria is transmitted by blood through an organ transplant, a transfusion or the use of shared needles or syringes.

Why Are Mosquitos Attracted to You?

Mosquitoes can smell human breath. They have receptors on their antennae that detect the carbon dioxide released when we exhale.

Sweat helps mosquitoes choose their victims. They use heat sensors around their mouthparts to detect the warmth of your body.

The best protection from mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid mosquito bites.

Malaria Facts

Malaria is caused by a parasite that lives in mosquitoes. It is usually found in tropical and subtropical climates where the parasites that cause it live.

In the absence of prompt and effective treatment, malaria often causes death. An infected mother can pass the disease to her baby at birth. This is known as congenital malaria. Globally, millions of deaths attributable to malaria are still being recorded.

In Nigeria, the disease is responsible for 40% of public health expenditure, 60% outpatient visits to health facilities, 30% childhood death, 25% of death in children under one year and 11% maternal death.

Malaria Symptoms

The symptoms of malaria typically develop within 10 days to 4 weeks following the infection. In some people, symptoms may not develop for several months as some malaria parasites can enter the body and be dormant for long period of time. The major symptoms of malaria are:

High Fever

Profuse Sweating

Headache

Nausea

Vomiting

Shaking Chills

Muscle Pain

Convulsions

Bloody Stool

Diarrhea
